Articles
a, an, the — and when to use none
Articles determine whether a noun is treated as specific or unspecific. Mastering articles prevents your essays from sounding unnatural to native examiners.
🧠 Core Principles
- Use "The" to refer to specific, uniquely identifiable things (e.g., "the environment", "the government").
- Use "A/An" to introduce a singular countable noun for the first time.
- Use Zero Article (nothing) for general plural nouns (e.g., "Computers have changed our lives") or general uncountable nouns.
🎯 In Practice (IELTS Context)
Government should provide the free education to all children.
The government should provide free education to all children.
Why? "The government" is specific. "Free education" is an abstract, uncountable noun used generally, so it takes zero article.
