Linking Words

Connectors used correctly and in context

Linking words (cohesive devices) glue your ideas together. The biggest trap in IELTS is overusing them or using them mechanically at the start of every sentence.

🧠 Core Principles

  • Use connectors only when there is a clear logical relationship to show (Addition, Contrast, Result).
  • Do not start every sentence with a linking word. Try embedding them in the middle of a sentence.
  • Ensure the connector matches the grammar of the sentence (e.g., "Despite" + Noun, NOT "Despite" + Clause).

🎯 In Practice (IELTS Context)

Public transport is cheap. However, it is beneficial for the environment.

Public transport is cheap; moreover, it is beneficial for the environment.

Why? "However" signals contrast, but the two ideas are both positive additions. "Moreover" or "Furthermore" correctly adds to the argument.
