Complex, compound, and run-on sentences
To achieve a Band 7+ in Grammatical Range, your essay must demonstrate a mix of error-free complex and compound sentences.
🧠 Core Principles
- A comma cannot join two full sentences (Comma Splice). Use a conjunction or semicolon instead.
- A complex sentence requires an independent clause and at least one dependent clause (starting with if, because, although).
- Avoid run-on sentences that drag on uncontrollably without punctuation.

Many students study abroad, they want to experience different cultures.
Many students study abroad because they want to experience different cultures.
Why? Two independent statements were incorrectly fused with just a comma. A subordinating conjunction ("because") legally connects them.
